#004: 2013 Prizm Basketball - “What’s in the box?!?”

When 2012 Prizm Basketball boxes hit shelves, the ultimate chase card of the following year’s release, 2013 Panini Prizm, was selling sunglasses and handbags on the street to provide for his family.

“The greatest NBA Draft story ever told” according to Adrian Wojnarowski. The five sons of a professional soccer player and a high-jumper overcame immeasurable odds – growing up stateless, without citizenship through homelessness and extreme poverty, the Ante bros shared everything, and hustled every day for their family to survive. Basketball was only introduced to Giannis Antetekounmpo in adolescence thanks to a local coach who saw his potential and begged him to play. Then dead-set on playing soccer like his now late-father, he only agreed to participate when the coach agreed to secure his parents' jobs.

Leading into the draft, he flew under the radar yet his raw ability was tantalizing. It was known he was not NBA-ready but the potential generational-type skillset was undeniable. Beyond his last name, there were a lot of questions about Giannis with how little footage was available. The list of unknowns was long, the list of regrets is much longer.

Along with the value of sealed 2013 Prizm Basketball, the legend and legacy of Giannis Antetekoumnpo only continues to grow. The reigning two-time MVP and Defensive Player of the Year became the highest-paid player in NBA history, “bucking the trend” if you will, re-signing with the small-market franchise that drafted him.

“Everything is like slow motion - like walking up the stairs - that’s when my life changed.”
